sisters talk of trolls
from their parents, books and school
who insist on certain rules
.
“If you want to write haiku”
they say
all the syllables must be
in lines of five seven five
.
And there are tanka rules too!
five seven five seven seven
is what you must do
.
yet where is the cadence
the song in the words
if we can’t break any rules?
